The Value of Helping Others During Difficult Times

“There are eight family members who were announced to be positive here in this barangay.”

One of the most meaningful experiences I had was during the COVID-19 pandemic, when our family was suddenly placed under quarantine and our house was cordoned off because one of our family members was reported to be positive for COVID-19, even though that person was actually not positive. It was a difficult and unexpected situation for us because everything happened so suddenly. There were police officers outside our house, and because we were suddenly required to stay inside, we were not prepared with enough food and other basic necessities.

At that time, I remember how helpless and worried our family felt. We could not simply go outside to buy food or get the things that we needed because we were required to stay inside. We also did not know how long the situation would last. It was a challenging experience because something as simple as getting food became difficult. We had no choice but to depend on other people for some of our basic needs.

Fortunately, our fellow neighbors helped us during that difficult time. They gave us food and other things that our family needed while we were quarantined. Their help meant a lot to us because they did not have to do those things for us. They could have simply minded their own business, especially since everyone was afraid of COVID-19 at that time. However, they still chose to help despite the situation.

This experience made me realize the importance of freedom of choice. The people who helped us had a choice whether to help or not. They were not forced to give us food or assist our family. They chose to help because they understood that we were in a difficult situation. Their choice had a positive consequence because it helped our family get through a stressful and uncertain time. It also showed me that even a simple act of kindness can have a meaningful impact on someone who is struggling.

What made the experience even more meaningful was what happened after our quarantine. When another family in our neighborhood was placed under quarantine, we also chose to help them. Since we had experienced being in their situation, we understood how difficult it could be to suddenly lose the freedom to go outside and provide for your own needs. We wanted to extend to them the same kindness that our neighbors had shown us. In a way, the help we received became something that we could also give to someone else.

Aside from our neighbors, we also witnessed how the barangay and other people in the community helped families who were affected by the pandemic. This made me appreciate people who were willing to help others, especially those who were already struggling financially or had limited resources. During the pandemic, not everyone had the same ability to prepare for emergencies. Some families had difficulty getting food and other basic necessities, so community support became very important.

This experience also taught me to be more understanding toward people from underprivileged sectors of society. Before the pandemic, I may not have fully understood how difficult it was for some people to meet their basic needs. Experiencing quarantine ourselves gave me a small understanding of what it feels like to depend on others during a difficult situation. It reminded me that we should not immediately judge people who need help because we may not know what they are going through.

Most importantly, I learned that our choices do not only affect ourselves. A choice to help someone can encourage others to do the same. In our case, our neighbors chose to help our family when we needed it, and later, we chose to help another family when they experienced a similar situation. The experience showed me that kindness can be passed from one person to another.

Looking back, I am grateful that although the pandemic brought fear, uncertainty, and difficulties to our family, it also allowed me to see the goodness of people around us. I learned to appreciate the people who are willing to help others without expecting anything in return. It taught me that having the freedom to choose also comes with the responsibility to consider how our choices can affect other people. Sometimes, choosing to help, even in a simple way, can make someone’s difficult situation a little easier.
